Cathay - The PictureHouse

I must say i've just seen an incredible movie. Or i might say that i have no idea what i've just seen. The things or feelings that this show is trying to convey.. I wonder if it really has brought it over to the audience. By judging the reaction i'm seeing on the faces of many after the movie, i feel that nobody understand anything about this movie at all.

TOYKO....

Perhaps let me explain(in my way and in my own words, of course) what this whole film is talking about and maybe u can share whether you feel the same way as me as well.

Let's first have some introduction from the cathay website itself.

Runtime: 90mins

A cinematic triptych of three Tokyo-set stories. Three short visionary films, each freely inspired by Tokyo, and shot in the heart of the city. INTERIOR DESIGN - The surreal fable of a young couple who move to Tokyo in search of a future. MERDE - A mysterious man spreads panic on the streets of Tokyo through a succession of irrational and provocative acts... SHAKING TOKYO - The hero is Hikikomori. Like many others in Japan, he has withdrawn from all contact with the outside world.

Let's start with 'INTERIOR DESIGN'. This story talks about a tale of how a young couple who move to Tokyo in search of a future. The man's main profession is that of an artist who wishes to aspire others with his strange firm:) That being said, he still work part time at a nearby store as a gift wrapping personel. His girlfriend on the other hand has no talent appartently in gift wrapping and the story don't seem to put this person in good light. She is protraited like a leecher more then anything. After hearing some disturbing words from her best friend, she seems to dream about something and wake up finding a hole in her chest. From then on, she started to change slowly into a chair. The weird thing is the change is reversable. She then finds herself 'taken(as a chair)' and kept in a new apartment. There, she serves her purpose as a chair and often help the owner do random stuff like cleaning etc(without the knowledge of the owner of course). In the end of this short story she seem to be satisfied with this new kind of life.

What it might mean:
I think that this girlfriend is trying to prove to the world that she can be useful in her little own ways. The amount of money you earn does not prove how useful you are. She does not mind if she does not get recognise in her world. However, she hasn't decided on a future right at that point of time.

MERDE - A mysterious man spreads panic on the streets of Tokyo through a succession of irrational and provocative acts. This is the 2nd clip that was shown. It talks about this man with his weird way of thing and acting. In the end, he was imprisoned and hanged. Although it wasn't really clear if he dead in the end.

What it might mean:
People always follow trends no matter if it make sense or not. If many trends originate from the same place it probably can evolve into an cult. Some people may start putting those trends together and worship them. I think it's trying to show humans are actually quite silly(?). Haha. I dunno but i enjoyed this the least out of the 3. Perhaps, i'm also trying to deny i'm silly:) haha.

The last part is called SHAKING TOKYO. The main character is Hikikomori. A Hikikomori is one that likes to stay at home and avoids human contact at all cost. This story is a simple love story(?) that involves a pizza girl delivering pizza to this Hikikomori house. This contact may be the start of the Hikikomori yeaning to go see this pizza girl. The show also expresses his struggles and frustration in his attempt to find the girl. In the end, he found her and expresses what he was trying to say by pressing the 'button(painted)' of the girl's arms.

What it might mean:
Humans often live in their own world organising it in incredible ways. Often, we are afraid of others and what they might bring to our organised lives. We might not be able to express our feeling properly at times and often stumple and left to fail. However, once you are able take the first step out. You might think about 'what the hell have i been doing all these years'. You might find out refreshing attributes about yourself and you can see clearly what others are doing that are similar to yourself. In the end, it's still a struggle to find out how to convey what you are feeling to another person. 'How hard is it to find someone that can understand you' is probably what's in my mind after i seen this movie.

Here you go, my overview and reflections. If you are also one of viewer of this movie, let me know what you think. Maybe, there are more insights to this film. Maybe, it's just something out of nothing. Or maybe, we have just wasted our time:)

In any case picturehouse はおもしろいでしょう?
